Railways

When the UK railway industry began upgrading the national network, replacing thousands of miles of track presented a huge logistical challenge. By producing rail in 250 metre lengths, however, the task could be made manageable. But how were tens of thousands of tonnes of rail to be delivered in these lengths? It was Cowans Sheldon. one of the railway industry’s oldest companies that provided the solution; the Long Rail Delivery System (LRDS) a specially developed automated train, capable of delivering mile after mile of rail each day.

Similarly innovative, Cowans Sheldon have developed a water-jetting system to tackle the problem of leaves on the line in Autumn – a debilitating phenomenen capable of grinding trains to a crawl in its worst extremes.
