Porto Cervo – Tuesday, September 23rd
The final engagement of the 52 Super Series 2025 season got underway today off Porto Cervo, Sardinia, in building breeze as a signature Mistral wind gradually dominated the dying Scirocco.
13 teams from 8 different nations engaged in battle for this, the final engagement of the season.
Langley Holdings’ Gladiator Sailing Team finished 7th in Race 1 with a solid performance after being closed out to start late on port tack, going out to the less-favoured right side of the race course.
Race 2 saw the Gladiator force Hahm Müller Spreer’s Platoon Aviation over the line at the pin end in the pre-start, but contacted the German boat’s stern as the 2022 season champions manoeuvred desperately for survival in the final moments before the gun. A general recall was announced as several boats were over the line at start time.
Umpires awarded three penalty points against the Gladiator and average points to the German team, who were unable to continue the restarted race due damage to their stern that also saw a crew member sustain a minor injury.
Team Boss Anthony Langley offered to retire for the day but the offer was not taken up and the Gladiators went on to win the pin in the re-started Race 2 to lead the fleet up the first beat, until a mistake by tactician Guille Parada in a tight cross with Quantum Racing Powered by American Magic resulted in a penalty turn that put the British boat in 12th place.
The Gladiators fought their way back into contention and by the second top mark were amongst the pack, sailing a strong second down wind leg , despite a gear failure in the now fresh-to-strong breeze, finishing 6th, one place ahead of Quantum Racing Powered by American Magic.
Tomorrow the Mistral is expected to strengthen through the day and the first warning has been brought forward from 13:00 to 10:30 CEST. It promises to be a lively one!
