Third podium of the season in Rolex TP52 World Championship

Langley Holdings’ Gladiator Sailing Team notched up their third podium of the season at the Rolex TP52 World Championship in Barcelona, August 22-26.

Light airs and sweltering heat were the flavour of the week for the 10 teams contending for this, the pinnacle event of the 2023 TP52 Super Series.

There was no racing Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday due to lack of breeze, with temperatures soaring into the high 30’s centigrade (90’s Fahrenheit).

The championship finally got underway on Thursday with three races held; three on Friday and; two on Saturday – all in light airs.

The Gladiators were lying in second place after day one of racing but slipped back to third place on day two, despite a race win in Race 6.

On the final day of racing, Emirates Team New Zealand’s Ray Davies stood in for team principal Tony Langley to call tactics, maintaining the Gladiators’ podium third position – their third this season.

Turkish team Provezza finished the Rolex TP52 World Championship in second place with the German team Platoon narrowly snatching victory from the Turks in the final race on Saturday.

The Gladiators are now just one point off third place overall to last season’s series winner, Quantum Racing Powered by American Magic.

The TP52 Super Series moves to Puerto Portals, on the Spanish Island of Mallorca, for the final engagement of the 2023 season, September 19-23.

Ten teams from six different countries competed for the Rolex TP52 World Championship in Barcelona, Spain, August 22-26.
