Team Gladiator

Podium finish for revamped team in St Tropez inaugural regatta.

The Langley Holdings revamped Gladiator sailing team made a solid start to the 2023 TP52 Super Series in St Tropez, May 3-7, finishing third overall in the eleven boat fleet.

Eleven boats from seven different countries entered the arena on the waters off St Tropez (often called “the jewel of the French Riviera”) for the first of five contests in this, the pinnacle of monohull yacht racing.

The team finished third in three of the eight races and were first in the final race on Sunday to complete the event on equal points with Quantum Racing – Powered by American Magic. The American boat took second place in the regatta on count back. First place went to the Turkish team, Provezza.

The Gladiator team has struggled to find consistent form in previous years. St Tropez was the first podium finish since 2017, when the Langley Holdings sponsored team tied on equal points for first place in Mahon, placing them second on count back.

Tony Langley has made radical changes to the team this season: five of the thirteen race crew are new, himself swapping from helmsman to the tactician role and bringing in four times series winning Argentinian helm Guille Parada to drive.

“Already we are seeing a marked difference in performance with the changes made for this season and with the work the shore crew have done over the winter to improve the boat” says Langley. “It’s early days but we are off to a good start”.

Next up, the Gladiator goes to Scarlino, in Italy, for the second bout of the TP52 Super Series, May 30 – June 3.
